UNESCO is a United Nation’s specialized agency seeking to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences, Culture and Communication and Information. Advancing cooperation in these fields makes UNESCO’s participation and contribution in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development more relevant than ever.

With its Headquarters based in Paris (France) and 53 Field Offices and Institutes worldwide, UNESCO counts over 2100 staff from diverse and multicultural backgrounds from our 194 Member States, working to advance the objectives of UNESCO’s mandate and mission.

The Organization strives to enhance international cooperation and foster intercultural dialog with focus on two priorities – Africa and Gender Equality – via diverse programmes and projects worldwide.

UNESCO Themes

UNESCO believes that all forms of discrimination based on gender are violations of human rights, as well as a significant barrier to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Our message is clear: women and men must enjoy equal opportunities, choices, capabilities, power and knowledge as equal citizens. Equipping girls and boys, women and men with the knowledge, values, attitudes and skills to tackle gender disparities is a precondition to building a sustainable future for all.

For UNESCO, gender equality is far more than just a slogan. The Organization is not only committed to empowering/advocating women’s presence in different initiatives but also is devoted to reach gender parity within its staff.

  • GENDER PARITY AT UNESCO SECRETARIAT

We are proud to be one of the few UN organizations, to date, to have achieved overall gender parity, in particular at the Senior Management level.

*As of January 2018
